Afsaneh Mahian

A distinguished Iranian theater director, was born in 1973 in Tehran. She holds both a bachelor’s degree in theater acting and a master’s degree in theater directing from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at Azad University, Tehran. Her professional journey in theater began in 1992, when she made her debut as an actress. Over time, her passion for storytelling evolved, leading her to focus on directing, and today, she stands as one of the few prominent female directors in Iran’s contemporary theater scene.

Mahian is a permanent member of the Association of Actors and Directors at the Iran’s Theater House. Additionally, from 2003 to 2015, she served as a board member of the Directors’ Guild at the Iran’s Theater House, where her influence on the development of theater in Iran has been notable.

A pivotal figure in her artistic development was Hamid Samandarian, one of Iran’s most revered theater veterans and an influential director and educator. Mahian was a close disciple of Samandarian, and she continues to preserve and promote his legacy. She is legally in charge of the publications of Master Samandarian’s works and plays and authored the book “This Stage Is My Home”, which provides an in-depth look into Samandarian’s life, philosophies, and contributions to the theater world.

In addition to her individual accomplishments, Afsaneh Mahian is the founder and director of Shieveh Theater Group, a collective that has produced acclaimed performances both in Iran and on international stages. Her works have garnered numerous awards, including at prestigious events such as Fajr Theater Festival, further establishing her as a key figure in Iranian theater.

One of the defining characteristics of Mahian’s body of work is her commitment to addressing social issues, with a particular focus on the lives and experiences of women. Many of her productions are rooted in documentary theater, where she undertakes extensive research to authentically portray the societal issues she wishes to highlight.

Her productions often transcend conventional theater, transforming into platforms for reflection and dialogue on pressing contemporary issues.

In addition to her directing and acting, Mahian has also ventured into playwriting, authoring three of her own works.
